Regulation of Newsracks in Public Right of Way

Please note these important details:

  • The locations listed on the Permit Locations document are for the core area of downtown (see map).. Other locations located within the overall downtown area, as denoted on the map below, are within the required permit area and should be noted and mapped by the applicant to be included with the application.
  • The number of corners that are allowed newsracks has lessened considerably and the most that can be at any allowed corner is 4, with some allowing only 2 or 3. Currently, most locations in the core downtown area have 10-12 newsracks, which is no longer allowed. Prior to sending payment, please ensure the requested numbers of locations have been confirmed.  Your current location is not guaranteed.

The ordinance regulating and requiring permits for newsracks in public right of way goes into effect September 1, 2007.

Any owner of a newsrack currently existing on any public right of way, parkway or sidewalk or in any other public way within the downtown area as shown on the map must apply for a permit or remove the newsrack by September 30, 2007.

The per box fee was approved by City Council on August 21; $20 application fee per applicant and $5 per newsrack.

The application is being finalized and will be online by end of day, August 31.

Please fax or email the application and appropriate attachments.
