The City of Fort Worth Fire Department is comprised of 904 Firefighter/EMT’s, 45 civilian support staff, and more than 60 pieces of apparatus providing fire and rescue emergency services to our citizens and visitors alike. We have 42 fire stations and cover an area of over 345 square miles. We currently have plans to build additional stations to keep up with the increasing growth of our city. The result of this will be more employment opportunities for interested men and women to explore.
Through the years he Fort Worth Fire Department has assumed a higher level of service to the citizens than ever before. Some of the services currently being provided, besides the expected control of fires, include Emergency Medical Services, Hazardous Materials Emergency Mitigation, Underwater/Swift Water Rescue, High Angle/ Trench Rescue, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting, and a host of other emergency and fire prevention services.

BENEFITS
- Base Salary - $3,104 monthly during training (approximately six months) / $3999 monthly upon graduation ($47,986 annually)
- Longevity Pay - $4 per month times the number of years of service, up to 25 years.
- Education Incentive Pay - $60 per month for associate's degree or 60 college hours and a degree plan from a four-year educational institution, or $120 per month for a bachelor's degree. This pay starts following one (1) year of commissioned service.
- Uniforms - All uniforms are furnished.
- Bilingual Incentive Pay - $50 per month upon successful completion of language Spanish proficiency test and use of that language on the job.
- Promotions - Promotions are granted on basis of competitive civil service examinations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
In order to be accepted into an entry level position with the City of Fort Worth Fire Department applicants must meet a specific criteria. The minimum standards required of any applicant for firefighter include:
Education - High school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or 12 semester hours of college.
Residency - Must live within 30 minutes drive time of designated report-in station; this must be accomplished within six (6) months of employment.
Age -18 to 35 years of age. (Cannot have reached 36th birthday by date of certification.)
License - At minimum, a current Texas Class "C" Driver's License or its equivalent from another state. No more than three “hazardous” moving violations in last two years (previous 24 months) and no license suspensions in the last two years (previous 24 months).
Criminal History - No felony conviction of any kind and no conviction for an offense above a Class “C” misdemeanor in the last five (5) years)
Veteran - Must have received an Honorable Discharge to qualify for veteran points on passing score of 70. Please submit photocopy of DD214 (Long Form- Member 4) at time of application.
SPECIAL NOTE - Applicants must successfully pass a written test, a physical assessment test, a background check, a polygraph examination, interview and medical/physical examination.

PHYSICAL ABILITY ASSESSMENT EXAMINATION
Following the completion of the required written examination, a designated number of the individuals who scored the highest will be asked to return at a latter date to take the physical ability assessment examination. Each applicant must pass a physical ability assessment, as prescribed by the Fort Worth Fire Department and approved by the Fort Worth Civil Service Commission, demonstrating the applicant is physically capable of performing the essential job functions for the position of firefighter. The examination, which is of a pass/fail format, consists of six events. The first is a 1.5 mile run that must be completed within 13 minutes 57 seconds (13:57). Those who succeffuly complete the run will be asked to return at a later date to take the five event examination that must performed in succession with a maximum time allowed for completion of all "stations" of 5 minutes 30 seconds (5:30). PHYSICAL STANDARDS DURING TRAINING
TRAINING PHILOSOPHY:
Physical fitness is an integral part of Fire Training. Your maintained fitness level may determine the quality of life you will experience as a career firefighter. Our desire is to hire physically capable uniformed personnel today, so that we can meet the challenges of tomorrows fire service.Physical fitness, for the fire service, is the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue and to meet the above average physical stresses encountered in emergency situations. The physical training program is a rigorous and demanding process designed to improve the fire trainee’s physical and mental conditioning.
PHYSICAL TESTING:
As a trainee in the Fort Worth Fire Academy, you will be required to satisfactorily qualify in the physical training program. Each trainee will be required to complete a physical test.
BENCHMARKS:
The physical fitness (running) benchmarks that will be assessed of all trainees are as follows:
1) First day – 1.5 mile run in 13:30 minutes (9-minute mile pace)
2) 2 weeks – 1.75 mile run in 15:45 minutes
3) 4 weeks – 2.0 mile run in 18:00 minutes
In addition to the above, Qualified Fitness Instructors using the Cooper Aerobics Research Institute of Dallas (fitness norms and protocol) will determine a score for each trainee's fitness evaluation. These norms are based on the age and sex of the trainees and include the evaluation of five (5) areas:
1) Dynamic Strength Push-Ups: Max push-ups in one (1) minute
2) Dynamic Strength Sit up/Curl up: Max sit-ups in one (1) minute
3) Flexibility: Sit and reach (flexibility test of the back and hamstring muscles.)
4) Cardiovascular: 1.5 mile run
5) Body Composition: % of body fat
SCHEDULE FOR GROUP RUNS:
The following is an example of the endurance standards and maximum time allowed for the daily runs. This schedule could increase or decrease according to the overall fitness performance level of the class. This is at the discretion of the Director of Training.

NOTE: The training will vary in distances and times beginning with Week 9, or possibly earlier depending on the overall fitness of the class, throughout the remainder of the academy.
The trainees must maintain the pace for the run as set by the physical training instructor or be subject to point deductions. A trainee shall be considered below minimum standards for physical training if the trainee fails to complete the run with the instructor within the maximum time allowed. In addition to the run, the trainees will be required to successfully complete a strength-training program as follows:
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of the first week, trainees shall properly perform three (3) sets of ten (10) push-ups and sit-ups for a total of 30 each. Pull-ups and chin-ups will be performed to the maxim effort of the trainee. Each Week 1 repetition will be added to each set. For example, Week 6 three (3) sets of 15, for a total of 45 push-ups and sit-ups.
